In poorly ventilated dwellings, smoke in and around the home can exceed acceptable levels for fine particles 100-fold. Exposure is particularly high among women and young children, who spend the most time near the domestic hearth. According to WHO, 4.3 million people a year die from the exposure to household air pollution.

Sulfur oxides (SOx) - particularly sulfur dioxide, a chemical compound with the formula SO2. SO2 is produced by volcanoes and in various industrial processes. Methane is an extremely efficient greenhouse gas which contributes to enhance global warming. Other hydrocarbon VOCs are also significant greenhouse gases because of their role in creating ozone and prolonging the life of methane in the atmosphere. This effect varies depending on local air quality. The aromatic NMVOCs benzene, toluene and xylene are suspected carcinogens and may lead to leukemia with prolonged exposure.

Urbanization is the physical growth of urban area as a result of rural migration and even suburban concentration into cities, particularly the very large ones. When India got her independence, the urban area was less than 34%. By 2050 it is predicted that 64.1% and 85.9% of the developing and developed world respectively will be urbanized.
